Dr. Harry Sugg from Dallas, TX was fortunate enough to be asked to be a part of The Pro Player Health Alliance (PPHA) and Gergen’s Orthodontic Labscreenings of NFL football players for sleep apnea during the Super Bowl weekend in New Orleans, LA. The two local Phoenix organizations and Sugg are continuing to build momentum with former NFL legends to help spread awareness on the deadly disorder Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). This screening was one of multiple screenings around the nation on their “Tackling Sleep Apnea” campaign.
The “Tackle Sleep Apnea” campaign consists of events in states all over the nation hosted by different physicians and dentists, who screen, diagnose, and treat sleep apnea. But The Super Bowl weekend was a success for Sugg. Sugg has now joined forces with the PPHA and Gergen’s Orthodontic Lab to raise awareness in his local community in Dallas, TX on television with Derek Kennard and Tony Dorsett.
Amongst the screenings in New Orleans some players that played a part in the screenings are Carl Eller, Wilbur Marshall, Guy McIntyre, Nat Moore and Mark Walczak, just to name a few. An additional 45+ players signed up for the screenings that took place over the 3-day event.
Walczak was at the Super Bowl on behalf of PPHA. He has been on a mission to spread awareness amongst his former teammates and anyone else that will listen to his story about how diagnosis and treatment with an oral appliance has changed his life. He simply wants to help others. His best friend, Junior Seau, who is tragically no longer with us, suffered from sleep disorders. This is just one of the reasons Walczak is so passionate about helping to spread awareness.
“I am thrilled to see the momentum that we are making to help spread awareness of sleep apnea on a national level with these fantastic NFL greats!” said Sugg. “Spreading awareness at these events and screenings and through radio and television has been wonderful.”
Statistically, over 60% of the NFL and former NFL players are suffering from sleep apnea and the campaign gives them, along with health care professionals, the opportunity to raise awareness and save lives through sharing their personal stories.
These Super Bowl screenings coordinated by the New Orleans and Dallas NFLPA Retired Players Chapters took place on February 1 and 2, 2013, from 10:00am to 2:00pm at a New Orleans Sleep-Dentistry location..
The next Tackle Sleep Apnea event will be in Lynnfield, MA on March 7.
